Karnataka HC stays proceedings in BJP's defamation case against Rahul Gandhi

BENGALURU: In a major relief for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Karnataka high court on Friday stayed further proceedings against him in the defamation case filed by the BJP. The court’s decision halts the case until the next hearing date in a special court for elected representatives.
Justice M Nagaprasanna issued an emergent notice to the BJP and adjourned the hearing to February 20.

The defamation case stems from allegations that Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, released a false advertisement targeting the BJP. The advertisement, published on May 5, 2023, in mainstream newspapers, accused the then ruling party, including Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, of corruption under the headline “Corruption Rate Card.”
Chief minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar are also named as co-accused in the case.
