Seat Belt Failure Led To Amusement Park Death

New Delhi: A seat belt malfunction caused the tragic death of 25-year-old Priyanka after she fell from the Top Spin ride at an amusement park near Kapashera last month, a mechanical inspection report of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has revealed.According to a senior police officer, in its report submitted to Delhi Police, the civic body stated that the seat belt failed to secure the rider properly. The mechanical flaw turned what should have been a thrilling experience into a fatal plunge from nearly 20 feet.Following the findings, three people were ‘bound down’ for negligence: Lalit, the ride operator; Dharambir, the supervisor on duty; and Jagjeet Singh, the park’s operations manager. ‘Bound down’ means that a person is required to appear before the investigating officer whenever asked to join the investigation, and must inform the police if they are leaving the city. There was no immediate response from officials of the amusement park. The tragedy took place on April 3. Priyanka, who lived with her family in domestic staff quarters in Chanakyapuri and worked as a relationship manager with an insurance company, was visiting the park with her fiancé Nikhil Singh. What began as a joyful day ended in a nightmare.“We left her home around 12.15pm and reached the amusement park by 1pm. After spending the afternoon on water rides, we went to the Top Spin at around 6.15 pm. We were seated next to each other, and as the ride started, she suddenly fell. I couldn’t do anything,” Nikhil said in his official complaint.“It happened within 15 seconds. Before the ride started, the operator assured me everything was fine. Others asked him the same question, but the operator told us he had 18 years of experience,” Nikhil had stated.Police were informed by the hospital, where Priyanka was declared dead on arrival. Her medical report cited severe injuries — laceration and puncture wounds on her legs, and multiple abrasions on her arms and knees.Investigators said Priyanka was among 17 people on the ride at the time. No one else was injured. The ride was immediately shut down and remains non-operational. A case under BNS sections 289 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 106 (causing death by negligence) was registered.Priyanka was set to get married next Feb. She had bought jewellery and planned to buy a house for her parents. The sole breadwinner of her family, Priyanka earned Rs 22,000 a month. Her family’s financial condition had spurred her to start working after completing Class 12. Her father said they had taken a loan for the elder daughter’s wedding and Priyanka was helping repay the debt.
