David Johansen family: All on wife Mara Hennessey and daughter Leah

David Johansen, the lead singer of the New York Dolls and a trailblazing punk icon, has died at age 75, just weeks after revealing his stage 4 cancer diagnosis. He had been battling a brain tumor and a decade-long struggle with cancer. Johansen passed away at his New York home on Friday, surrounded by his wife, Mara Hennessey, and daughter, Leah Hennessey.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Leah shared, “David Johansen passed away peacefully at home, holding the hands of his wife, Mara Hennessey, and daughter Leah, in the sunlight surrounded by music and flowers. After a decade of profoundly compromised health, he died of natural causes.”

“David and his family were deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support they’ve experienced recently as the result of having gone public with their challenges,” she added. “He was thankful that he had a chance to be in touch with so many friends and family before he passed.”

Johansen was married three times. His first marriage, to actress Cyrinda Foxe, lasted from 1977 to 1978. He then married Kate Simon in 1983. They separated in 2011.

In 2013, he wed artist Mara Hennessey, who survives him along with his stepdaughter, Leah Hennessey, who is a writer, performer, and director.

On February 12, Leah provided an update on her father’s condition.

“He’s very, very sick, but he’s reading all the messages and he’s getting in touch with people he hasn’t talked to in many years,” she told PEOPLE. “The connection is probably the best thing for him right now — as it is for all of us.”

She told the outlet that that her father had a bad fall on Thanksgiving, which left him bedridden.

“He was just walking down the stairs and he slipped,” she said. “The fall is really when things turned. It really accelerated things.”
