'He was a disobedient student': Man kills 14-year-old son in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: City police arrested a 40-year-old carpenter on charges of beating his younger son to death inside their Kashninagar residence in KS Layout, the southern part of the city on Friday, by claiming that he was a disobedient student. The accused is Ravi Kumar, and the victim is R Tejas.
Tejas is survived by his elder brother and parents. His sibling is a Class X student, while his mother, Shashikala, is a homemaker.
According to police, Ravi Kumar tried to hush up the incident by hurrying to carry out the last rites of the boy. To neighbours and others, he told Tejas died of sudden illness. The body was placed outside the Kashinagar residence on Friday evening with a view to carrying it to the crematory. However, Shashikala stood strong and sought neighbours’ help in alerting the police. After police reached the spot, she narrated the incident and then filed a criminal case against her husband, following which cops arrested Kumar.
According to Shashikala, Ravi Kumar grew angry when Tejas demanded to repair the mobile phone used by him and his brother, mostly for playing games. “My husband was upset with Tejas, saying he was not attending the classes properly, which resulted in low academic performance. On Friday morning, Tejas demanded that the mobile phone should be repaired. At this point, my husband took a wooden log used in his carpentry work and beat up Tejas all over the body. Losing control of him, he dashed Tejas’s head against the wall,” Shashikala stated in her complaint made to KS Layout police. Then, Kumar went out for work.
Following the thrashing, Tejas went to bed and soon fell unconscious. “By afternoon, Shashikala shifted him to a nearby hospital. A little later, Ravi Kumar too reached the hospital. There, Tejas breathed his last,” an investigating officer said.
