Pune police map 2,576 crime hotspots; max areas fall in Zone V, III

The city police have identified 2,576 crime hotspots and most of it come under the Zone V and III police station areas, officials said.

Under the Cop24 initiative, the police are undertaking patrolling and surveillance five times a day to curb crime cases. The observations by patrolling teams are registered in MySafe and Dial 100 apps, officials said.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had launched Cop24, a new patrolling initiative aimed at strengthening law enforcement and reducing police response time, in the city.

The system is centrally managed by the crime branch, ensuring more coordinated and efficient deployment of police personnel across the city. It leverages technology, data analysis, and real-time monitoring to enhance public safety, particularly in high-crime areas.

Meanwhile, the crime branch has collated data of 30,000 criminals in the city and uploaded on the MySafe Crime Module app of the city police. The data consists of the place of stay of the criminal, offences registered, and the most recent cases lodged against the person. The beat patrol policeperson has been instructed to regularly update the accused’s whereabouts and make digital entries regarding the same.

Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said that some bold initiatives have been undertaken wherein the combination of technology and traditional policing is resulting in good results on the grounds.

“We have been able to reduce street crimes and murder and attempt to murder cases have been brought down due to mapping and harnessing technology for crime reduction. More than 2,500 hotspots of crimes have been mapped and dossier of 30,000 criminals updated for swift action by police station and crime branch officials,” he said.

The police have kept a target to reduce murder related crimes by over six per cent as compared to previous year after crime hotspot mapping project.

The commissioner said that the police have achieved a hundred per cent rate of reaching the crime hotspots five times during the day during morning and night sessions. The police administration was also considering how to address the issues of patrolling red zone areas under the jurisdiction of some police station areas where hotspots have been pointed out during the survey.
