Courageous move, AAP only serving Arvind Kejriwal's interests: BJP on Kailash Gahlot's resignation

NEW DELHI: Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kailash Gahlot resigned from the party on Sunday, joining a growing list of former members who have left due to the party’s shift away from its founding values to prioritise the interests of its convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, according to the BJP.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticized AAP for undergoing a “political conversion,” claiming it has become a “khas” (privileged) party.
Poonawalla stated that everyone who has left AAP was disillusioned because the party has become focused solely on Arvind Kejriwal’s political interests. “It has turned into the Arvind Aadmi Party,” he remarked.
Gahlot, the Delhi transport minister, explained in his resignation letter that the party’s political ambitions had overtaken its commitment to serving the people. He stated that AAP has increasingly focused on its political agenda rather than advocating for the rights of the people, citing recent controversies and unfulfilled promises as key reasons for his decision.
In response to Gahlot’s resignation, Poonawalla remarked, “In his resignation, Kailash Gahlot highlighted how AAP has become a ‘khas’ party that has undergone political conversion and strayed from the values it once stood for.”
He accused AAP of failing to deliver on its promises to the people of Delhi, such as reducing pollution and cleaning the Yamuna River, and claimed the party has been mired in corruption.
Poonawalla also pointed out the irony of AAP’s leaders, who had previously promised not to align with the Congress or accept luxurious housing, but ended up prioritizing personal interests and moving into the “Sheeshmahal.”
The BJP spokesperson noted that Gahlot’s resignation is not an isolated case and echoed the concerns of former AAP members like Anna Hazare, Yogendra Yadav, and Kumar Vishwas, who had previously criticized Kejriwal and the party.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva supported Gahlot’s decision, calling it a courageous move. “Gahlot stepped down because he raised the same issues that the BJP has been protesting against Kejriwal and AAP. His resignation proves that even AAP leaders do not consider Kejriwal an honest politician,” Sachdeva said.
Gahlot, the MLA from Najafgarh, resigned from the Delhi Cabinet with immediate effect. Official sources confirmed that his resignation was accepted by Delhi Chief Minister Atishi. Gahlot held key portfolios including Home, Administrative Reforms, IT, and Women and Child Development.
This development comes just ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February.
